शब्द "इक़्तिसाद" (economy) एक प्राचीन यूनानी शब्द से निकला है, जिसका अर्थ है घरेलू मामलों की ऐसी योजना बनाना कि उसके सक्रिय सदस्य वस्तुओं के उत्पादन और सेवाओं के प्रदर्शन में मिलकर सहयोग करें, और उसके सभी सदस्य अपने पास मौजूद चीज़ों के उपभोग में हिस्सा लें। समय के साथ, लोगों ने "घर" के अर्थ को बढ़ाया, यहाँ तक कि वह उस समुदाय के लिए प्रयुक्त होने लगा जो एक ही राज्य द्वारा शासित होता है।

The word economy (Iqtisaad) is derived from an old Greek term, which means the planning of home affairs, such that its active members associate in producing the commodities and performing the services, and all of its members share in enjoying what they possess. Through time, people extended the meaning of home until it meant the community which is governed by one State.

इस शब्द "इक़्तिसाद" (economy) को इसके भाषाई अर्थ, अर्थात मितव्ययिता या संपत्ति, के रूप में प्रयोग करने का इरादा नहीं है। इससे अभिप्राय इस शब्द का पारिभाषिक अर्थ है, यानी संपत्ति का प्रबंधन: या तो उसकी वृद्धि और उसके उत्पादन को सुरक्षित करने के द्वारा, जिसकी चर्चा आर्थिक विज्ञान में होती है; या फिर उसके वितरण के तरीके के द्वारा, जिसकी चर्चा आर्थिक व्यवस्था में होती है।

It is not intended to use the word economy (Iqtisaad) in its linguistic meaning which is saving or to mean property. What is meant is the technical meaning of the word i.e. the management of property, either by its increase, and securing of its production which is discussed in economic science; or by the manner of its distribution, which is discussed in the economic system.
