The time term of the Khaleefah in office is not determined by a fixed period. लेकिन यदि ख़लीफ़ा में ऐसा कोई बदलाव आ जाए जो उसे इस पद के अयोग्य बना दे, या जो उसे हटाए जाने की ज़रूरत पैदा कर दे, तो उसका कार्यकाल समाप्त हो जाएगा और उसे हटा दिया जाएगा। हालाँकि इसे ख़िलाफ़त के कार्यकाल की कोई सीमा नहीं समझा जाना चाहिए, बल्कि इससे केवल यह संकेत मिलता है कि ख़िलाफ़त की शर्तों का उल्लंघन हो चुका है। बै'अत के शब्द, जो शरई नुसूस और सहाबा की सामान्य सहमति से सिद्ध हैं, ख़िलाफ़त को असीमित कार्यकाल वाला बनाते हैं। बल्कि उसकी सीमा इस बात में है कि ख़लीफ़ा किस काम के लिए बै'अत दिया गया है, यानी किताब और सुन्नत के अनुसार शासन करना और उनके क़ानूनों को लागू करना। यदि वह शरीअत पर अमल नहीं करता या उसे लागू नहीं करता, तो उसे हटाना ज़रूरी है।
