Los objetivos del sistema de castigos son triples:

The objectives of the punishment system are three fold :

1) Castigar a los culpables de un delito, actuando así como kaffara (expiación) y reformándolos.

1) To punish those guilty of crime, thereby acting as kaffara (purification) and reforming them.

2) Actuar como un elemento disuasorio para la sociedad, a fin de que no cometa delitos.

2) To act as a deterrent for society from committing crime.

3) Ser un medio de retribución para quienes son víctimas de un delito.

3) To be a means of retribution for those who are victims of crime.

Existen diversos grados de castigo que corresponden a la gravedad del delito, a la naturaleza del delito y a otros factores que lo rodean. Todos ellos tienen el efecto de lograr los objetivos expuestos anteriormente.

There are various degrees of punishment that accord with the severity of the crime, the nature of the crime, and other factors which surround it. These all have the effect of achieving the objectives detailed above.
