तथाकथित 'सभ्य संसार' में पुरुषों और महिलाओं की भूमिकाएँ स्वतंत्रता की अवधारणा द्वारा परिभाषित की जाती हैं। यद्यपि अनेक लोग इसे एकमात्र न्यायसंगत तरीका मानते हैं, फिर भी इसकी सफलता का वास्तविक प्रमाण समाज के व्यापक स्वरूप में देखा जा सकता है।

In the so-called ‘civilised world’, the roles of men and women are defined by the concept of freedom. While this is held by many to be the only just way, the real proof of its success can be seen in the society at large.

समाज महिलाओं पर कुछ निश्चित भूमिकाओं को अपनाने का दबाव डालता है, जो अपने स्वभाव से ही उनके सम्मान और गरिमा को नष्ट कर देती हैं; फिर भी वे स्वयं को स्वतंत्र समझती हैं। 'फ़ैशन' तय करता है कि उन्हें स्वीकार्य रूप से सुसज्जित दिखने के लिए स्वयं को उघाड़ना होगा। उनके शरीरों को कारें और चॉकलेट बेचने के लिए वस्तुओं की तरह इस्तेमाल किया जाता है। अश्लील सामग्री (पोर्नोग्राफ़ी) को आम तौर पर शोषण के बजाय एक अधिकार के रूप में देखा जाता है। महिलाएँ स्वयं को पुरुषों से होड़ करते हुए पाती हैं, और वही भूमिकाएँ निभाने के लिए संघर्ष करती हैं।

Society pressures women to conform to certain roles, which by their nature destroy their honour and dignity; yet still they believe themselves to be liberated. ‘Fashion’ dictates that they must undress themselves to be acceptably attired. Their bodies are used like commodities to sell cars and chocolate bars. Pornography is commonly seen as a right, rather than exploitation. Women find themselves competing with men, and struggling to fulfil the same roles.

यौन स्वतंत्रता के माहौल के भी अपने परिणाम हैं। बलात्कार, गर्भपात और वेश्यावृत्ति समाचारों में रोज़मर्रा की घटनाएँ बन चुकी हैं। व्यभिचार, विवाह से पहले यौन संबंध और समलैंगिकता पूरी तरह स्वीकार्य माने जाते हैं, जबकि इन्हें अस्वीकार करने वालों को 'पिछड़ा' समझा जाता है। हज़ारों महिलाएँ अकेले ही बच्चों का पालन-पोषण करने को मजबूर हैं, और साथ ही इस चिंता में भी रहती हैं कि अपना गुज़ारा कैसे करें।

The air of sexual freedom, too has its consequences. Rape, abortion, and prostitution are everyday occurrences in the news. Adultery, sex before marriage and homosexuality are perfectly acceptable, while those who reject them are seen as ‘backward.’ Tens of thousands of women are forced to bring up children on their own, while at the same time worrying about how to provide for themselves.

वास्तव में, 'स्वतंत्रता' के विचार की जगह 'गैर-ज़िम्मेदारी' ले लेती है। इसके परिणाम विनाशकारी होते हैं।

In reality, the idea of ‘freedom’ is replaced by ‘irresponsibility.’ The effects are disastrous.

इस्लाम पुरुषों और महिलाओं को एक-दूसरे पर प्रभुत्व जमाने या एक-दूसरे का शोषण करने की स्वतंत्रता नहीं देता। अपनी प्रकृति से पुरुष और महिलाएँ भिन्न हैं, और जीवन में उनकी भूमिकाएँ स्पष्ट रूप से अलग-अलग हैं। इन भूमिकाओं को वही निर्धारित कर सकता है जो ऐसा करने में सक्षम है, अर्थात् अल्लाह (सुब्हानहु व तआला), जिसने पुरुषों और महिलाओं को पैदा किया है।

Islam does not leave men and women free to dominate or abuse each other. By their nature, men and women are different, and they obviously have different roles to play in life. These roles are defined by the only one capable of doing so, Allah (swt) who created men and women.

इस्लाम स्त्रियों को सम्मान, गरिमा और सुरक्षा प्रदान करता है। मुस्लिम स्त्रियों को अपने अधिकारों के लिए कभी संघर्ष नहीं करना पड़ा - ये अधिकार उनके ईमान द्वारा सुनिश्चित हैं। न ही उन्हें पुरुषों से प्रतिस्पर्धा करनी पड़ती है। इसके बजाय, पुरुषों और स्त्रियों के एक-दूसरे के प्रति अधिकार और कर्तव्य एक-दूसरे को पूरी तरह से पूरक बनाते हैं। संबंधों को विवाह, उत्तरदायित्व और एक स्थिर पारिवारिक ढाँचे द्वारा नियमित किया जाता है, जहाँ पुरुष भरण-पोषण करने वाले और संरक्षक होते हैं।

Islam gives women honour, dignity and protection. Muslim women never had to fight for their rights - these are guaranteed by their belief. Nor do they have to compete with men. Instead, the rights and duties of men and women to each other complement them perfectly. Relationships are regulated by marriage, responsibility and a stable family structure, where the men are the providers and protectors.

केवल एक संक्षिप्त अध्ययन से भी यह स्पष्ट हो जाता है कि इस्लाम की सामाजिक व्यवस्था किस प्रकार पूरे समाज में एक ऐसा वातावरण सुनिश्चित करती है जिसमें स्त्री और पुरुष के बीच गरिमा और पारस्परिक सम्मान हो, और जहाँ दोनों के जीवन एक सुंदर सामंजस्य के साथ व्यवस्थित किए गए हैं।
